How to Dry Tofu for Maximum Flavor and Texture

Drying tofu before cooking with it can enhance its flavor and texture, making it a versatile ingredient for a variety of dishes. Here’s how you can dry tofu:

Step 1: Press the Tofu

Remove the tofu from its packaging and place it between two layers of paper towels. Place a heavy object, such as a cast iron pan or a cutting board, on top of the tofu and let it sit for 30 minutes to 1 hour to remove excess moisture.

Step 2: Cut the Tofu into Desired Pieces

Once the tofu has been pressed, cut it into the desired pieces. If you’re using it in a stir-fry or a salad, cut it into small cubes. If you’re using it in a soup or a stew, cut it into larger pieces.

Step 3: Air-Dry the Tofu

Place the cut tofu pieces on a wire rack or a paper towel-lined plate. Let the tofu air-dry for several hours, flipping the pieces occasionally, until the surface is slightly tacky to the touch.

Step 4: Store the Tofu

Once the tofu has been dried, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

By following these simple steps, you can dry tofu for maximum flavor and texture. Whether you’re using it in a stir-fry, a salad, or a soup, you’ll find that dried tofu is a delicious and versatile ingredient.
